2 Simple Ways to Teach Your Dog Not to Dig

Published by positiveminded1977 at 10:45 am under Dog Training Edit This

Stopping Fifi or Fido from digging up your garden is no big deal, actually. Rule number one is never to chastise the animal; you will only make your pet feel scared of you, and you don’t want this to happen. Remember that dogs will be dogs; in other words, it is the nature of a dog to dig. You simply have to teach your dog that digging up your garden is not a great idea. And how do you do this?

1. Water

Fortunately for us, our four-footed digging friends dislike water. The minute you see Rover digging madly in your lawn, turn the hose on him. Rover will believe that the garden has turned against him for digging and will never repeat the behavior again.

Alternatively, you can purchase a water pistol or even turn on the sprinklers whenever you see your dog in a digging mode.

2. Plenty of Exercises

Little Gypsy digs for want to better things to do; in other words, the poor darling is bored stiff. You are making a big mistake if you leave your puppy alone for long hours. Your puppy will find ways to amuse herself that you will strongly disapprove of.

Don’t leave your furry pet alone in the garden for long hours. Spend lots of time playing with her. Purchase a few toys from the pet shop that will keep her amused. Take her on long walks; give her plenty of exercise; talk to her; and play with her. Then, she will be too tired to dig!

If your pet’s behavior doesn’t improve now, I will eat my hat!

So, as you see, getting your dog to behave as per your wishes is not that difficult. Your pet is eager to please you…this is the best thing about dogs. They love to see you happy. Simply give your dog some great alternatives to digging and your dog will soon learn to leave your cherished garden alone.
